Canucks beat Flames behind Sedin's 2 goals
Mar 13, 2011 - 7:40 AM Calgary, AB (Sports Network) - Daniel Sedin scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner late in the second period, as the NHL-leading Vancouver Canucks held off the Calgary Flames, 4-3.Ryan Kesler and Alexandre Burrows also lit the lamp for the Canucks, who went 5-0 on a five-game road trip.
"I don't look at it as a five-game road trip," said Canucks head coach Alain Vigneault. "I look at it as one game at a time. We got ready for each game, we analyzed it, we learned from it, and we moved to the next."
Roberto Luongo made 20 saves for Vancouver, which has taken four of five from Calgary this season.
Mikael Backlund, Matt Stajan and David Moss scored for the Flames, who have lost consecutive games in regulation for the first time since January 3 and 5.
Miikka Kiprusoff turned aside 28-of-32 shots for Calgary, which started a three-game homestand on Saturday.
Backlund gave the Flames a 1-0 lead just 2:14 into the game. Backlund stole the puck in the Vancouver zone and backhanded the puck past Luongo.
Stajan gave Calgary a 2-0 margin at the 3:32 mark. A shot from the right point left a rebound in front for Stajan, whose backhander found the back of the net.
Kesler lit the lamp on the power play at the 8:48 mark to make it a 2-1 game. His wrister from the top of the right circle got past Kiprusoff.
Sedin tied the game at the 9:46 mark of the middle stanza with a snap shot from the slot.
But Moss scored just over a minute later to give the Flames the lead again. Luongo failed to fully cover up a shot from Jarome Iginla, and Moss was right there to chip the puck into the net.
Burrows made it a 3-3 contest with 4:19 to go in the second. Sedin's shot from the right point was deflected in by Burrows.
Sedin then scored on the power play with 15.6 seconds remaining to give the Canucks a 4-3 lead. A shot from the point left a rebound at the side of the net for Sedin, whose wrister beat Kiprusoff.
Luongo made six saves in the third period to secure the win.
"We liked the way we started the game," said Flames assistant coach Dave Lowry. "They're a good hockey team, very opportunistic, and we had a couple breakdowns and they capitalized."
