Clemmensen, Panthers shut out Leafs

Mar 18, 2011 - 2:28 AM Sunrise, FL (Sports Network) - Sergei Samsonov ignited a three-goal second period, and the Toronto Maple Leafs' playoff drive hit a bump in the road with a 4-0 loss to the Florida Panthers at BankAtlantic Center.

Stephen Weiss scored a power-play goal and set up another for the Panthers, who improved to 3-2-1 on their seven-game homestand.

Scott Clemmensen made 24 saves to record his first shutout of the season.

"I was glad for the guys," said Florida head coach Peter DeBoer. "We got a lot of kids up here that are competing real hard and trying to do the right thing."

Jean-Sebastien Giguere, making his first start since February 16, stopped 22 shots for Toronto, which remained four points behind eighth-place Buffalo in the Eastern Conference standings.

Rookie goaltender James Reimer had started the previous 13 games for the Maple Leafs, going 6-3-3 over that span.

Florida grabbed a 1-0 lead 49 seconds into the second period. The Panthers cycled the puck along the boards and Niclas Bergfors dished to Jason Garrison, who let go a one-timer from the left point that was deflected in by Samsonov.

Weiss pumped home his 20th goal of the season to double Florida's advantage at 5:11. With Toronto forward Nikolai Kulemin serving a hooking penalty, Weiss fired a wrister from the right circle that beat a screened Giguere.

The Panthers struck again on the power play as Mike Santorelli buried his own rebound to make it 3-0 at 11:31.

Keaton Ellerby added an empty-net goal with 3:24 remaining in the third period.

Game Notes

Toronto had gone 5-0-2 in its last seven road games...The Maple Leafs were 0- for-5 on the power play...Clemmensen has six career shutouts.
