Red Wings spoil MacLean's Senator debut

Oct 8, 2011 - 3:46 AM Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Cory Emmerton had a goal and an assist as the Detroit Red Wings roughed up the Paul MacLean-led Ottawa Senators, 5-3, in the opener for both clubs.

MacLean was hired by the Senators this past June to replace the fired Cory Clouston after the team missed the playoffs for the second time in three seasons and finished dead last in the Northeast Division.

He had served as an assistant under Mike Babcock in Detroit for the past six seasons and won a Stanley Cup with the team in 2008.

However, his former squad roughed up his new team as Todd Bertuzzi, Cory Emmerton, Nicklas Lidstrom, Jiri Hudler and Ian White all had goals for the Red Wings, who were eliminated by San Jose in seven games in the conference semifinals last season.

"They worked themselves back in the game and we can't allow that," said Lidstrom. "We have to work on that if we're going to be successful this season."

Jimmy Howard stopped 29-of-32 shots in the winning effort.

Milan Michalek had a pair of goals while Filip Kuba also scored for the Senators, who got 34 saves from Craig Anderson.

"They have a good team over there and they capitalized on our mistakes," said Anderson. "We have to cut down on our turnovers and make some better decisions."

The Red Wings took the lead with 3:59 to play in the first after Darren Helm sent a pass through the middle for Bertuzzi, who was behind the defense and snapped a shot into the right corner.

Just 99 seconds into the second, an Ottawa giveaway saw Lidstrom get the puck at the left circle and from down low he chipped it past Anderson.

Another Ottawa turnover behind the net saw Detroit take advantage as Drew Miller picked the puck off a Senator and centered it for Emmerton, who had the easy slam at the 9:40 mark.

Just 58 seconds later, Pavel Datsyuk picked the puck off a defender in the high slot and slid it over to the right circle for Hudler, who lifted a backhand over the glove of Anderson for a 4-0 lead.

White scored at the 3:12 mark of the third to make it a 5-0 contest.

Michalek had an even-strength goal at the 5:49 mark and followed that with a power-play marker 2 1/2 minutes later.

Kuba's goal came with 1:31 left in the game on the power play to account for the final score.
