Ducks beat Rangers in shootout in Sweden

Oct 9, 2011 - 12:30 AM Stockholm, Sweden (Sports Network) - Bobby Ryan scored the lone goal in the fourth round of the shootout to lift the Anaheim Ducks to a 2-1 win over the New York Rangers at Ericsson Globe Arena in Stockholm, Sweden.

Ryan beat Swede Henrik Lundqvist with a shot between the legs, although he was trying to go low to the glove side.

"That's kind of my favorite shot," said Ryan. "I think if I had hit my mark I would have missed, because he was already there. So I'll take that lucky break any day."

After Ryan scored, Artem Anisimov missed with a backhander for New York, which tied the game on Brad Richards' late third-period goal, his first as a Ranger.

Both teams opened the season Friday, with New York blowing a third-period lead in a 3-2 overtime loss to Los Angeles on the same ice surface.

It was Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh who was whistled for tripping in the extra session, leading to the winning goal for the Kings.

On Saturday, McDonagh set up Richards' tying marker. New York's prized free- agent addition gathered McDonagh's pass from the left point and beat Jonas Hiller up high from in tight with 2:15 remaining.

The Anaheim goaltender faced only 15 shots, including just three after the second intermission.

Lundqvist finished with 27 saves.

"This trip has been a great experience, and it's also been really intense. For me personally going on this trip was very special," Lundqvist said.

Newcomer Andrew Cogliano put the Ducks on the board at the 9:26 mark of the first period, converting Andrew Gordon's feed from the corner.

Game Notes

The Ducks opened the 2011-12 campaign with a 4-1 loss to Buffalo in Helsinki, Finland...Saturday's game marked the first of two meetings between the clubs this season. The Ducks and Rangers will play in New York on November 3...Devante Smith-Pelly recorded his first NHL point with the secondary assist on Cogliano's goal...The Rangers were 0-for-7 on the power play, while the Ducks finished 0-for-6.
