Green lifts Caps over Hurricanes in OT
Oct 9, 2011 - 4:41 AM Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Mike Green scored with 2:36 remaining in overtime, as the Washington Capitals edged the Carolina Hurricanes, 4-3.Alexander Semin, Jason Chimera and Brooks Laich added goals for the Capitals, who got 28 saves from Michal Neuvirth.
Jussi Jokinen scored for the Hurricanes with 1:19 remaining in the third period to force overtime. Eric Staal added a pair of goals, while Brian Boucher had 32 saves.
"It was one of those game that could've gone our way but it didn't," said Boucher. "We'll just have to regroup."
Although Jokinen was the hero for the Hurricanes in regulation, he proved a detriment in overtime, leaving his team short-handed with a holding penalty.
Green took advantage, beating Boucher with a wide-open slap shot during the power play to notch the game-winner.
Neither team scored during the opening period. Staal's first goal came with 7:44 left in the second during a power play and put Carolina on top, 1-0. Jokinen placed a cross-ice pass on Staal's stick, who lit the lamp for the early advantage.
A pair of breakaway goals allowed the Capitals to grab the lead, however. Semin beat Boucher with a backhand and Chimera's wrist shot put Washington on top 2-1 heading into the third period.
Staal's second goal came early in the third and knotted the contest. A turnover in the Capitals' zone led to another cross-ice pass -- this time from Jeff Skinner -- which Staal received and snapped past Neuvirth.
With under four minutes remaining, Washington held a two-man advantage, and Laich put home a rebound off of Alex Ovechkin's missed one-timer for a 3-2 Capitals lead.
With 1:19 remaining, Skinner pulled the puck out of a scramble and found Jokinen alone near the net for the game-tying goal.
"I like how we played tonight," said Jokinen. "I really like how we played...it's tough to lose late."
