Report: Keenan to coach Flames

Jun 14, 2007 - 6:03 AM TORONTO (Ticker) -- The Calgary Flames are on the verge of hiring Mike Keenan as their new coach, according to a report by TSN.

The network, citing unnamed sources, indicated that an official announcement is expected Thursday or Friday.

The Flames went 43-25-10 last season under first-year coach Jim Playfair, whose future with the team is unclear. The Flames finished eighth in the Western Conference and lost in six games to the Detroit Red Wings in the first round of the playoffs.

It was the second consecutive season that the Flames were eliminated in the first round.

Keenan has 569 wins in 1,014 games as an NHL coach and led the New York Rangers to the Stanley Cup in 1994.

Most recently the coach of the Florida Panthers in 2003-04, Keenan also has coached the Philadelphia Flyers and Chicago Blackhawks to the Stanley Cup Finals during his career.
