Hurricanes take RW Sutter at No. 11

Jun 23, 2007 - 12:32 AM COLUMBUS, Ohio (Ticker) -- The Carolina Hurricanes on Friday selected right wing Brandon Sutter of the Western Hockey League's Red Deer Rebels with the 11th overall pick in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.

Coached by his father Brent, Sutter scored 20 goals and added 37 assists in 71 games during his second season with Red Deer. The 18-year-old, who also collected 54 penalty minutes, skated alongside cousin Brett and served as the team's assistant captain.

Sutter also played for Canada at this year's Under-18 World Championship, recording a goal and an assist in six contests. However, his stock plummeted by the end of the season, falling from the No. 9 position among North American skaters in the Central Scouting Service's midterm rankings to 28th overall.

The 6-3, 170-pounder possesses the typical traits his father and five uncles displayed in the NHL - grit, determination and a strong work ethic. He also is smart with the puck and can play in any situation but must improve his conditioning and 1-on-1 skills.
