Predators stop skid with OT win over Sens
Mar 11, 2014 - 6:51 AM Ottawa, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - Rookie defenseman Seth Jones scored with 1:11 remaining in overtime and the Nashville Predators edged the Ottawa Senators, 4-3.The Senators forced the extra session with a spirited third-period comeback, scoring three times in the final 12:05.
On the game-ending goal, Nashville defenseman Ryan Ellis had a breakaway. Robin Lehner stopped Ellis' shot, but Jones pushed the rebound under the goalie's right pad.
Nick Spaling combined with Craig Smith and Eric Nystrom for Nashville's three- goal second period. The output matched the total amount of goals the Predators scored in their previous four games, all regulation losses.
Pekka Rinne made 34 saves in his first win since returning from a hip infection.
Senators starting goalie Craig Anderson allowed three goals on 29 shots before being shaken up in a third-period collision. Lehner stopped 12 shots in relief for Ottawa, which has dropped five of its last seven games.
The recently acquired Ales Hemsky keyed the rally, collecting assists on all three Ottawa goals.
"It shows a lot about the character in the room," Hemsky said about his team's comeback.
The first two were scored by defenseman.
After Jared Cowen chipped the puck over Rinne to put the Senators on the board, Marc Methot trimmed the deficit to one at 10:34.
Hemsky moved the puck behind the Nashville net to Jason Spezza and he whipped it out front to Methot, whose one-timer found the back of the net.
Spezza tied the game with 1:07 remaining. Hemsky sent a slap pass that deflected off Nashville defenseman Shea Weber and on goal. Spezza was positioned at the left post and banged home the puck.
"They played hard in the third and it was obviously nice getting that one in overtime," said Nashville forward Mike Fisher.
The Predators broke out of their offensive funk in the middle stanza.
Spaling and Smith each scored on deflections 1:40 apart, with the latter goal coming at the midway point of the period.
A failed clear by Methot led to Nystrom beating Anderson for his 100th NHL point.
