Stars head to St. Louis after Peverley health scare
Mar 11, 2014 - 3:13 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - After a scary turn of events led to a home game being postponed on Monday, the Dallas Stars will get back to the business of playing hockey when they visit the St. Louis Blues for Tuesday's battle at Scottrade Center. The Stars hosted Columbus on Monday and the game started before eventually being postponed early in the first period due to a medical emergency involving Dallas forward Rich Peverley. Peverley, who had a procedure performed during the preseason to correct an irregular heartbeat, collapsed shortly after completing a shift as players from both teams frantically called for medical personnel to assist the nine-year veteran. The incident occurred with 13:37 remaining in the first period and the Blue Jackets holding a 1-0 lead.
Peverley was transported to a local hospital after being attended to for several minutes, and the Stars later issued a statement saying that he was conscious and his current condition is not life-threatening.
The 31-year-old was held out of the Stars' game at Columbus last Tuesday following a recurrence of his condition, but returned two days later and recorded two assists in Dallas' 6-1 win over Vancouver. Peverley regained consciousness before he left American Airlines Center on Monday, and Stars head coach Lindy Ruff remarking that he was asking to get back in the game.
A makeup date for Monday's contest has yet to be determined.
Dallas, which has won two straight and three of its last four games, enters Tuesday with a one-point lead over Phoenix for the last playoff spot in the Western Conference. The Coyotes are also in action on Tuesday, as they get set to play a road game against the Florida Panthers.
Meanwhile, the streaking Blues will try to build on their lead atop the NHL standings when they welcome the Stars tonight.
St. Louis is leading the West and the entire league with 94 points, one more than the Anaheim Ducks.
The Blues matched their second-longest winning streak of the season by recording a fifth consecutive victory Sunday in Minnesota. The club also won five straight from Nov. 19-27 and also during a season-best seven-game tear from Dec. 28-Jan. 9.
St. Louis' most recent triumph came via a shootout, as T.J. Oshie and Alexander Steen each scored in the game's decisive phase to lift the Blues to a 3-2 decision over the Wild. In addition to being the Blues' fifth straight win overall, it also was the club's eighth victory in a row against Minnesota.
Brian Elliott, who gave new No. 1 goaltender Ryan Miller a rest, had 17 saves through regulation and overtime before turning away both Minnesota chances in the tiebreaker.
"They (Wild) play a defensive shutdown system and we try and do the same," said Elliott on the challenges playing the Wild. "It's tough generating chances sometimes."
Miller expects to be back in the crease for the Blues on Tuesday. The former Vezina Trophy winner is 4-0 with a 1.50 goals against average and .933 save percentage with St. Louis since being acquired in a trade with Buffalo on Feb. 28.
St. Louis is 2-0 against the Stars in 2013-14 and has taken three straight and seven of the last eight meetings in this series. Dallas has dropped four in a row at Scottrade Center and was slammed by a 6-1 score when it visited the Gateway City on Nov. 23.
Beginning with tonight's test versus Dallas, the Blues, who boast a terrific 23-5-3 mark as the host this season, are playing two straight and three of their next four games on home ice.
The Blues have won three straight and five of their last six home games.
