Canucks end road skid with SO win at Winnipeg
Mar 13, 2014 - 3:56 AM Winnipeg, MB (SportsNetwork.com) - Chris Higgins scored the game winner in the third round of the shootout, as the Vancouver Canucks halted their seven-game road skid with a 3-2 win over the Winnipeg Jets on Wednesday at MTS Centre. After the first five shooters came up empty, Higgins charged in down the middle and made a number of quick dekes before stuffing a forehand past Ondrej Pavelec's outstretched right pad for the victory.
Alexandre Burrows scored his first two goals of the season to account for Vancouver's offense in regulation, while Eddie Lack stopped 32 shots before turning aside all three shooters in the shootout.
"It was one of those nights it seemed the puck was finding me around the net," Burrows said. "I had a lot of chances. Honestly, I think I had four real good looks."
Andrew Ladd and Michael Frolik each lit the lamp for Winnipeg, while Pavelec posted 31 saves in the setback, the Jets' fifth in a row (0-2-3).
"It's a loss because of the shootout," Winnipeg head coach Paul Maurice said. "It's a 2-2 game in terms of how it was played and I think that's a pretty accurate assessment of how the game went."
With the game tied 1-1 early in the third period, Olli Jokinen carried the disc into the Vancouver zone and made his way to the top of the left circle before feathering a backdoor pass for a cutting Frolik, who one-touched the puck into the back of the net with a backhand to make it 2-1 at 2:18.
Burrows used some impressive hand-eye coordination to tie the game at 11:17, as a scrum behind the Winnipeg net saw the puck sail high into the air before Burrows swatted it out of midair and into the net from the low left side.
Neither offense managed much from there, and after a high-paced, back-and- forth overtime failed to produce a winner, the teams headed to a shootout.
Following a scoreless first frame, the Jets jumped on top 3:48 into the second when Ladd rifled a wrister from the slot high over Lack's blocker off a feed from Bryan Little.
Evander Kane had a chance to give Winnipeg a two-goal cushion when he was awarded a penalty shot at 9:01 after being taken down on a breakaway by Christopher Tanev. However, Kane's shot missed the net.
Burrows evened things at 15:38 when he buried a rebound from the slot off a Jason Garrison point blast to make it 1-1.
