Red Wings edge Oilers in shootout

Mar 15, 2014 - 4:48 AM Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Tomas Tatar scored in the third round of the shootout to give the Detroit Red Wings a 2-1 win over the Edmonton Oilers on Friday.

Tatar faked from the backhand to his forehand before lifting the puck high over Viktor Fasth. Jimmy Howard then stopped Taylor Hall for the win.

"We had to work for everything," said Howard. "They're a dangerous team right now when they are playing as loose as they are. They're just wheeling-and- dealing out there and they're a tough team to play against. They have a lot of skilled forwards and they made us work for everything here tonight."

Riley Sheahan scored in the first period and Howard finished the game with 21 saves for the Red Wings, who had dropped four of five coming in.

Ryan Smyth scored in the third period and Fasth made 22 saves for the Oilers, who have dropped three of four.

"I wish we would have got a better result. I thought our guys worked hard for it," said Oilers head coach Dallas Eakins.

Detroit scored at 13:53 of the first period when Tatar was about to go behind the net from the right side, but quickly threw a turnaround pass to the front that Sheahan shot in for his fifth of the year.

The score stayed that way until the third, when Edmonton caught a break as Detroit defenseman Brendan Smith sent a blind backhand pass from his own right corner to the stick of Smyth, who quickly shot it in at 8:43 of the period to tie the game.

Edmonton then survived a pair of late penalties for delay of game after players shot the puck over the glass, one with 2:54 to play in regulation and the other at 1:21 of overtime,

Detroit plays in Chicago on Sunday ... Edmonton plays at Carolina on Sunday ... Detroit has won six in a row and 13 of its last 14 meetings against Edmonton ... Detroit was 0-for-4 on the power play, while Edmonton was scoreless in its two chances.
