Ducks use strong second period to power past Avalanche
Mar 15, 2014 - 4:54 AM Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Kyle Palmieri scored two goals in a six-goal second period for the Anaheim Ducks, who defeated the Colorado Avalanche, 6-4, on Friday.Daniel Winnik, Corey Perry, Ben Lovejoy, and Mathieu Perreault also lit the lamp as the Ducks snapped a four-game skid. Cam Fowler, Nick Bonino, and Ryan Getzlaf all contributed two assists each. Jonas Hiller turned aside 34 shots for the victory.
"I thought we started out well tonight," said Getzlaf. "We dug in and shut them down in the neutral zone and we created chances."
Jamie McGinn supplied two goals, while John Mitchell and Gabriel Landeskog also scored. Ryan O'Reilly added two helpers for the Avalanche, who won two games and six of their last seven entering the contest.
"I have never seen a period like that. We were not supporting each other and our play did not just work out. There was a lot of intensity out there," said Landeskog about the frantic second period.
Semyon Varlamov allowed five goals and Jean-Sebastian Giguere entered the game in the second to turn aside 8-of-9 Anaheim shots in relief.
Mitchell wristed a shot home from the slot to open the scoring 12:25 into the first. After Winnik's wrister beat Varlamov's glove early in the second, McGinn scored on the power play to help the Avs regain the lead.
The Ducks would notch the next four goals to take control of the game. Palmieri scored two goals in a 47-second span. He first deked past Varlamov to slide a backhander past him at 7:47 and then beat the netminder with a wrist shot at 8:34.
Over a minute later, Perry wristed a shot from the right circle to make it a 4-2 game and Lovejoy's slap shot from the right point chased Varlamov out of the game.
Colorado got within one in a 33-second span towards the end of the second. McGinn whacked home a rebound in front with 1:19 to go and Landeskog patiently skated across the goalmouth to backhand a shot past Hiller with 49 seconds remaining to make it a 5-4 game.
Perreault capped the scoring after he tipped in Jakub Silfverberg's shot from the slot with 49 seconds left in the middle frame.
Colorado appeared to get within one after Nathan MacKinnon tipped the puck out of the air and off Hiller into the net, but his stick was above the crossbar and was ruled not a goal with 6:08 to go.
