Bruins down Devils for 10th straight win
Mar 19, 2014 - 2:42 AM Newark, NJ (SportsNetwork.com) - Brad Marchand and Jarome Iginla scored 59 seconds apart early in the second stanza to help boost the Boston Bruins to their 10th straight win with a 4-2 decision over the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday at Prudential Center.New Jersey's Patrik Elias evened the game at 1-1 with his 5-on-3 power-play goal 29 seconds into the second period, but Marchand answered with a short- handed tally 54 seconds later before Iginla followed with his 26th of the season at the 2:22 mark to provide the visitors with a two-goal edge.
Patrice Bergeron and Chris Kelly also lit the lamp for the Bruins, while Chad Johnson backstopped the victory with 22 saves.
Travis Zajac assisted on Elias' marker and also scored once for the Devils, who have dropped three straight games. Martin Brodeur made 27 saves in the setback.
"Our effort is just not at the right spot for the urgency we need to make that push to the playoffs," Brodeur said of his squad, which now sits five points back of the second wild card spot in the Eastern Conference.
Elias' one-timer from atop the right circle beat Johnson short-side 29 seconds into the second, but the Bruins countered less than a minute later after Marchand was stripped as he tried to split two defenders in the left circle.
A trailing Bergeron recovered the loose puck and swatted it through the slot to Marchand, who buried a one-timer for a 2-1 lead at 1:23.
"Playing with (Bergeron), he makes a lot of great plays, so I just try to capitalize for him," Marchand said of the pass that set up his short-handed marker.
Just under a minute later, David Krejci controlled the puck in the left circle of his own end before banking a lead pass off the right boards to spring Iginla down the right side.
Iginla then carried the disc into the right circle before rifling a wrister that snuck through Brodeur's five-hole to make it 3-1 at 2:22.
Kelly pounded home a one-timer from the slot off a Carl Soderberg feed 7:11 into the third for a 4-1 edge, but New Jersey answered just over two minutes later when Zajac ripped a wrister from the right circle off the far post and in at 9:13.
However, New Jersey's Andy Greene went off for hooking just 32 seconds later and the Devils were unable to solve Johnson the rest of the way.
Bergeron snuck a backhander through Brodeur's five-hole from the low left side with 5:27 left in the first to open the scoring.
