Stars hold on to beat Jets
Mar 25, 2014 - 6:39 AM Dallas, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Tyler Seguin's power-play goal in the second period proved to be the game-winner as the Dallas Stars held on to defeat the Winnipeg Jets, 2-1, on Monday.Ray Whitney also scored on the power play and Jamie Benn supplied two assists in the Stars' second straight win. Kari Lehtonen turned aside 32-of-33 shots in the win.
Bryan Little contributed Winnipeg's lone goal on the power play. Al Montoya made 25 saves for the Jets, who have dropped three of their last four.
"I thought we battled hard to try and get back in the game for the most part, especially in the third," said Little.
The Stars took advantage of Winnipeg's penalty for too many men on the ice. Benn sent a cross-ice pass over to Whitney, who ripped a laser from the left circle that beat Montoya short side 5:32 into the first.
Benn sent a pass across the crease to Seguin, whose wrist shot was initially denied by the glove of a sprawled Montoya. A scrum ensued in front of the Winnipeg net, but Seguin tracked down the rebound and fired it into the net for a 2-0 lead with 3:51 to go in the second.
Montoya slid across the crease to make a remarkable save and deny Whitney point black to keep it a two-goal game eight minutes into the third.
Alex Goligoski went off for a hooking penalty with 2:59 remaining, and 15 seconds later Winnipeg got within one. Evander Kane blasted a low shot from the top of the right circle. The rebound went off Lehtonen's pads and straight to Little, who quickly deposited the puck into the back of the net.
Winnipeg pulled Montoya with under two minutes remaining, but could not generate the comeback.
"We played sound defensively," said Stars head coach Lindy Ruff. "Special teams won us the game and our goaltender made some big saves when we needed them."
