Blackhawks fend off plucky Stars
Mar 26, 2014 - 4:53 AM Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Duncan Keith netted the deciding goal late in the second period and Marian Hossa added an empty-net insurance marker as Chicago topped Dallas, 4-2, at United Center.Andrew Shaw and Kris Versteeg also lit the lamp for the Blackhawks, who have won three of their last four and took the season series against their Central Division rivals by a 4-1-0 count.
"It was a big win tonight," Keith said. "I thought we came out, had a pretty good start and we were able to get one on the power play which was nice to get us jump-started."
Corey Crawford stopped 25-of-27 shots for the victorious hosts.
Ryan Garbutt registered both goals for the Stars, while Kari Lehtonen came up with 38 saves in the loss.
"It's that time of year where it doesn't really matter if you had your chances," Garbutt said. "At the end of the day you have to get the two points so we gotta make sure we come back hard next game here."
Despite coming up empty on a power-play chance earlier in the third and facing a two-goal deficit, Garbutt stuffed one home from behind the net and inside the right post with 5:40 to play, and the Stars climbed back within 3-2.
Lehtonen was called to the bench for an extra skater with well over one minute to go, and Chicago's first try to the empty cage was negated after officials ruled the puck was batted in due to a high stick.
Hossa made no mistake, though, on the next shift, providing the winning two- goal margin at 19:26.
Shaw slid home a loose puck created from a Patrick Sharp rebound and Chicago led 1-0 with 18 seconds left in the first period.
Versteeg doubled the hosts' edge at 4:12, then Garbutt put the Stars on the board just after the midway point of the second when he cut from left to right and beat Crawford through the pads on the backhand.
It was 3-1 on Keith's left-point blast off a dish from Sharp at 14:15.
