Ducks escape Calgary with win
Mar 27, 2014 - 5:14 AM Calgary, AB (SportsNetwork.com) - Mathieu Perreault and Andrew Cogliano scored in the third period as the visiting Anaheim Ducks rallied to beat the Calgary Flames, 3-2.The Ducks were routed 7-2 by the Flames in their last trip to the Saddledome two weeks ago and trailed 2-1 after two periods on Wednesday before mounting a comeback.
"There was sloppy play in front of our net, but I think we never gave up and kept coming," said Anaheim head coach Bruce Boudreau.
Jonas Hiller made 32 saves for Anaheim, which closed to within two points of first-place San Jose in the Pacific Division. The Ducks do have two games in hand.
Karri Ramo stopped 31 shots for the Flames, who were seeking a third straight win.
Perreault and Cogliano scored in identical fashion, with each one banging home a rebound of a shot from the point.
A blocker save by Ramo resulted in a scramble and Perreault tied the game at 2-2 at 5:32 of the third, sweeping in the loose puck.
Cogliano jumped on a rebound and buried a shot from near the bottom of the left circle, giving the Ducks the lead with 5:19 remaining.
"In the third period, they got two good breaks and they deserved them because they worked us hard," said Calgary head coach Bob Hartley.
With 18.7 seconds left in regulation and Ramo on the bench, Saku Koivu hooked Matt Stajan, putting the Flames on a late power play. Calgary couldn't produce an equalizer on the brief 6-on-4 advantage.
The Ducks opened the scoring on a power play late in the first period. Nick Bonino carried the puck into the Calgary zone and made a deke before firing a shot from the left circle past Ramo with 1:03 remaining.
Calgary grabbed a 2-1 lead on second-period goals from Brian McGrattan and Jiri Hudler.
The Flames pulled even on a double deflection. Tyler Wotherspoon's shot from the right point was redirected by Kevin Westgarth, then pinballed off McGrattan, playing in his 300th NHL game, and into the Anaheim net at 4:44.
A one-timed rocket by Hudler put Calgary in front with 25.5 seconds left.
