Barrie boosts Avs over Canucks OT
Mar 28, 2014 - 5:03 AM Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Tyson Barrie scored the winner 55 seconds into overtime as the Colorado Avalanche took a 3-2 win over the Vancouver Canucks on Thursday. In the extra session, Matt Duchene circled around the left boards to get clear of defenders before firing a pass to the front of the net where Barrie tipped it home for the win.
"Two of their guys went to Duchene and I went to the net," said Barrie of the goal. "He sent me a great pass and I was just glad to get it in. That was a real tough game."
Duchene had a goal and an assist while Gabriel Landeskog also had a goal for the Avalanche, who have won their past two after a three-game losing streak. Semyon Varlamov stopped 29 shots in the win.
With 95 points, Colorado sits just one point back of Chicago for second place in the Central Division with a game in hand.
Yannick Weber and Zack Kassian scored for the Canucks, who had a three-game winning streak stopped. Eddie Lack turned away 25 shots in the loss.
"We out-played them in the third, but it was not good enough," said Kassian. "We got the point and had a good road trip."
Vancouver's playoff hopes are quickly fading, as the team is five points back of Phoenix for the final wild card spot with just seven games to play.
Vancouver scored on the power play at 10:50 of the first period for a 1--0 lead when Weber buried a rebound chance from the left circle for his fifth of the year.
Colorado, though, answered five minutes later as Duchene chipped in a rebound from the low right side for his 23rd of the season.
The Avalanche took a 2-1 lead in the second period as a quick pass from Paul Stastny behind the net found Landeskog for a one-timer and his 24th of the season at 8:58.
Vancouver tied the game with 1:22 to play in the middle stanza, as Dan Hamhuis threw a shot on net from the left point that deflected to the low right side where Kassian slammed it in.
