Oilers overcome penalties, get by Ducks in OT
Mar 29, 2014 - 5:22 AM Edmonton, AB (SportsNetwork.com) - Andrew Ference scored with 1:09 left in overtime to help the Edmonton Oilers to a 4-3 win over the Anaheim Ducks.Edmonton had taken two penalties earlier in the overtime, leading to a brief 5-on-3 for Anaheim, but the Ducks took a whistle and the teams wound up skating 3-on-3.
With a lot of ice to work with, Ference grabbed the puck in the neutral zone and skated down the middle, winding up for a big blast that ticked off the right post and in.
"It was that 3-on-3 mode still so just a lot of ice that was just sitting there in the middle," said Ference. "I wasn't about to try anything too fancy so I just kind of old school, stepped up and whacked it."
Jordan Eberle, Oscar Klefbom and Sam Gagner scored for the Oilers, who snapped a three-game skid. Ben Scrivens made 48 saves in the win.
Nick Bonino, Mathieu Perreault and Patrick Maroon all scored for the Ducks, who had won two straight entering the contest. Jonas Hiller stopped 19 shots in the loss.
"Yeah, he was pretty good tonight," said Anaheim head coach Bruce Boudreau about Scrivens. "Anytime you get over 50 shots on a goal and you lose, you've got to tip your hat a little bit to the goalie."
With 102 points, Anaheim is one point back of idle San Jose for first place in the Pacific Division with two games in hand.
It took just 35 seconds for the Ducks to take the lead as a give-and-go play between Ryan Getzlaf and Bonino was finished off by Bonino for his 19th of the season.
Edmonton tied the game four minutes later on a 2-on-1 break that saw Gagner put in a backhander from down low.
The Oilers went on top at 10:22 of the second as Eberle put home a nice feed from Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, but Maroon tied the game five minutes later when he stuffed the puck in from the right side.
The Oilers took a 3-2 lead at 8:26 of the third when Klefbom let fly with a wrister from the slot that made its way through traffic for his first career goal.
Anaheim, though, tied the game with 4:30 to play as Maroon's backhand pass from the left of the net to the slot was one-timed in by Perreault for his 17th goal of the season.
