Ladd, Jets beat Coyotes in SO
Apr 2, 2014 - 6:11 AM Glendale, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Andrew Ladd scored in regulation and had the only goal in a shootout to give the Winnipeg Jets a 2-1 win over the Phoenix Coyotes on Tuesday night.Ladd clanked a shot off the post and in to beat Thomas Greiss in the second round of the shootout. The Jets then secured just their fourth win in their last 15 games when Phoenix's Antoine Vermette hit the post in the third round.
Ondrej Pavelec made 29 saves as the Jets beat the Coyotes for the fourth straight time.
"It was a back-to-back, it is never easy. We played pretty good," Pavelec said.
Zbynek Michalek scored and Greiss had 21 saves for the Coyotes, who have lost two in a row.
Dallas beat Washington earlier Tuesday night and has tied Phoenix for the last wild-card slot in the Western Conference.
"I thought we played pretty well," said Coyotes defenseman Keith Yandle. "We did some good things and got a point. It's tough this time of year when you don't get two, but one is something to wish for."
Phoenix is 2-1-1 since starting goaltender Mike Smith went down with a knee injury in the third period of an overtime loss to the Rangers on March 24.
The Coyotes got an unlucky whistle in this one.
It sounded before Coyotes forward Mikkel Boedker crashed into the crease to force the puck over the line behind Pavelec with just over a minute left in regulation.
Jets defenseman Jacob Trouba was holding it against Pavelec's right pad after the goalie had stopped Vermette on a wrap-around attempt.
Ladd beat Greiss from the left circle midway through the first period after the Coyotes had trouble clearing the puck, which hit off a referee in the right corner. It was his 23rd goal of the season.
Michalek scored his second of the season from the slot 19 seconds into the middle period at the end of a tic-tac-toe play with Boedker and Vermette.
