Sharks inch closer to Ducks with win over Oilers
Apr 2, 2014 - 6:35 AM San Jose, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Patrick Marleau's power-play goal at the 12:31 mark of the third period lifted the San Jose Sharks to a 5-4 win over the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday.Brent Burns and Dan Boyle finished with one goal and one assist apiece for the Sharks, who had dropped four of five entering the contest. San Jose (105 points) moved within a point of the Anaheim Ducks (106) for the top spot in the Pacific Division.
"It's a bittersweet win," Sharks coach Todd McLellan said. "It was nice to see us come back and score five, and the power play contributed. Those types of things are nice, but I'm going to leave the rink a little more frustrated than excited. I still think our team looks lethargic. Not as much physically but mentally."
Antti Niemi stopped 25-of-29 shots in the win.
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins had two goals and two assists while Taylor Hall and Jordan Eberle chipped in with a goal and two assists apiece for the Oilers, losers in five of their last six games.
"We battled extremely hard," Edmonton coach Dallas Eakins said. "In my recent memory I can't remember a game where we were supporting and fighting and battling [like we did]. I liked our compete level."
Ben Scrivens allowed all five goals on 33 shots in the setback.
Nugent-Hopkins gave Edmonton a 4-3 lead with his goal 6:16 into the final frame. Eberle fed Nugent-Hopkins at the left circle and he turned and fired a wrister into the net.
Burns scored the game-tying goal with 10:35 left. Joe Thornton skated across the crease and shoveled a pass to Burns, who buried the disc into the net.
Marleau scored the game-winner less than two minutes later. Burns fired a shot from the blue line that bounced off Scrivens and right to Marleau, who stuffed the rebound in for a 5-4 lead.
Andrew Desjardins opened the scoring just 3:11 into the game. Hall got the Oilers on the board with his 26th goal of the season at the 12:34 mark.
Boyle made it 2-1 just over three minutes later with a wrister from the slot.
Tommy Wingels scored just 2:45 into the second, but Nugent-Hopkins and Eberle scored back-to-back goals 38 seconds apart to tie things up.
