Ducks seek to move closer to division title against Oilers

Apr 2, 2014 - 2:40 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - In danger of losing some control in their chase for a Pacific Division title, the Anaheim Ducks instead put together the greatest comeback in franchise history.

That inched the club closer to a second straight division crown and the Ducks aim to make it three victories in a row on Wednesday night versus the Edmonton Oilers.

Anaheim kicked off a three-game homestand on Monday by welcoming Winnipeg to town, but the Jets were rude visitors as they went up 4-0 at the 10:54 mark of the second period.

However, Anaheim was able to rally for a 5-4 overtime victory.

The Ducks were able to get on the board before the end of the second frame as Nick Bonino's goal with 2:16 on the clock was the first of five unanswered for Anaheim. Ryan Getzlaf and Hampus Lindholm scored within the first five minutes of the third frame and Corey Perry capped the rally by tallying with 22.7 seconds left in regulation to force overtime.

Defenseman Stephane Robidas then came through with the game-winner just 16 seconds into the bonus hockey as his slap shot from the high slot beat Jets goaltender Ondrej Pavelec.

Anaheim had never before come back from more than a three-goal deficit and the club moved to 4-0-1 in its last five games overall.

"We didn't have a great start. Being down 4-0 halfway through the game, it's tough to overcome," Perry said. "But we said in here, if we keep pushing and playing that style we established in the second half of the second period, no team can play with us. That's the way we've got to keep playing."

Frederik Andersen made 33 saves, Perry netted his 39th goal of the season, second most in the NHL, and both Mathieu Perreault and Patrick Maroon extended their point streaks.

Perreault notched an assist to give him six goals and four assists over a career-high nine-game run, while Maroon's first career two-assist game gave him a pair of goals and six helpers over his five-game streak.

The Ducks set a club record with their 49th win of the season, surpassing the 48-win total set by the Stanley Cup-winning 2006-07 club, and moved three points ahead of the San Jose Sharks for first place in the Pacific Division.

The Sharks were able to pull back to within a point following Tuesday night's victory over the Edmonton Oilers, but the Ducks have two games in hand.

The Ducks and Oilers, who sit last in the Western Conference with 61 points, will wrap their season series with two meetings over the next five days. Anaheim will visit Edmonton on Sunday after concluding its homestand on Friday versus the Nashville Predators.

The Ducks won their first two encounters with the Oilers this season to push their series winning streak to six in a row before the Oilers won the most recent encounter 4-3 in overtime at home on March 28.

Anaheim has still won 16 of the last 19 meetings overall as well as three straight and seven of the previous nine at home.

The Ducks could have used some help from the Oilers last night, but instead Edmonton was defeated 5-4 by San Jose.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins had two goals and an assist, Taylor Hall notched a goal and three assists and Jordan Eberle finished with a goal and two helpers.

"We battled extremely hard," Edmonton coach Dallas Eakins said. "In my recent memory I can't remember a game where we were supporting and fighting and battling [like we did]. I liked our compete level."

Ben Scrivens allowed all five goals on 33 shots in the setback.
