Blackhawks score 4 times in third to down Sabres

Oct 12, 2014 - 6:02 AM Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Patrick Kane ignited a four-goal third period with his first tally of the season, to lead Chicago past the Buffalo Sabres, 6-2, in the Blackhawks' home opener on Saturday.

Marian Hossa, Patrick Sharp and Daniel Carcillo also scored in the final stanza for Chicago, which opened the season with a 3-2 shootout win over Dallas on Thursday.

"(Carcillo) was good. That was one of the best games we have ever seen him play tonight," Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said.

Andrew Shaw and Duncan Keith each lit the lamp in the first period and Corey Crawford made 21 saves in the win.

Zemgus Girgensons scored for a second straight game and Tyler Ennis netted Buffalo's other goal. Jhonas Enroth allowed all six goals on 47 shots.

"The speed that the came at us with right away and then we settled in," said Ennis. "We're a good team when we play aggressive."

Kane, a Buffalo native, opened the frenetic third by one-timing a pass from Shaw through the legs of Enroth for a 3-2 lead at 5:58.

Hossa pushed the lead to two, when he raced into the Buffalo zone on a short- handed 2-on-1 break with Jonathan Toews and found twine with a wrister midway through the third.

After Tyler Myers went off for roughing with 7:33 to play, the Blackhawks cashed in. Sharp's blast from the point ricocheted off Enroth's stick into the net at 13:16 for a 5-2 game.

Carcillo tipped in Brandon Saad's pass from down low at the left side of the net to cap the scoring with 2:37 left in regulation.

Chicago wasted no time getting on the board and shaking up the 22,012 in attendance. Shaw deflected Niklas Hjalmarsson's shot from the point 59 seconds into the game.

Keith replied just under two minutes later with a snap shot. The two-time Norris Trophy winner took Cody Hodgson's turnover and ripped a shot from the high slot for a 2-0 lead.

Andrej Meszaros fired a shot from the right circle that was stopped by Crawford, who couldn't hold on to the rebound. Girgensons gathered the loose puck and roofed it over a sprawled Crawford to cut the deficit 7:17 into the first.

The Sabres tied the game with 1:20 before the first intermission. Drew Stafford tracked down a loose puck and dished it through the neutral zone up to a streaking Ennis, who moved the puck from his backhand to forehand and beat Crawford with a low shot.

Chicago outshot Buffalo by a 47-23 margin ... Stafford finished with two assists for his 300th career point ... The Blackhawks have won their last six games against the Sabres ... The last time Buffalo defeated Chicago was on Dec. 11, 2009 in Buffalo.
