Ducks try to stay on track against Sabres
Oct 13, 2014 - 12:44 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Anaheim Ducks try to build off their first victory of the young campaign on Monday afternoon as they visit the winless Buffalo Sabres.Anaheim suffered a 6-4 loss to Pittsburgh last Thursday, but bounced back to beat Detroit 3-2 on Saturday thanks to a late tally by Ryan Getzlaf. His second goal of the game came with 24 seconds remaining.
After stripping Red Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall of the puck in the right corner, Getzlaf beat Jimmy Howard with a wrister over the goaltender's shoulder.
Matt Beleskey also scored and Frederik Andersen made 27 saves for the Ducks.
"We were able to get the job done and that's the main thing you are trying to build on early in the season," said Getzlaf.
Anaheim today plays the third contest of a season-opening four-game swing, a trek that concludes on Tuesday in Philadelphia. The Ducks will then skate in their home opener on Friday versus Minnesota.
The Sabres hope to pick up the pieces following a 6-2 setback to the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday.
Buffalo escaped the first period with a 2-2 tie despite getting outshot 17-10 in the frame and kept the Blackhawks off the scoreboard in the second, but Chicago erupted for four goals in a dominating third frame.
The Sabres ended up getting outshot 47-23 in the game, with Jhonas Enroth coming up with 41 saves.
Zemgus Girgensons scored for a second straight game and Tyler Ennis netted his first career shorthanded goal for the Sabres.
"The speed that the came at us with right away and then we settled in," said Ennis. "We're a good team when we play aggressive."
The Sabres lost both of their meetings with the Ducks last season, giving up six goals in each encounter. Anaheim notched a 6-3 win in Buffalo on Nov. 2, then posted a 6-2 home victory six days later.
