Senators conclude road trip versus Panthers

Oct 13, 2014 - 1:55 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Ottawa Senators conclude a season-opening three-game road trip on Monday evening as they look to keep the Florida Panthers winless on the young campaign.

The Senators have split the first two of this swing, losing in regulation to Nashville on Thursday before notching a 3-2 shootout win over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday.

Mark Stone and Erik Karlsson scored third-period goals and both Kyle Turris and Mika Zibanejad had shootout tallies. Robin Lehner made 38 saves in the win.

"We were pesky and stuck with it," said Ottawa head coach Paul MacLean. "Much of the game didn't go the way we planned it, but we had some good work from the defense and goalie and it paid off."

The Panthers will need a better effort from their defense and goaltending as they try to avoid a third straight setback.

Florida was edged 3-2 in overtime by Tampa Bay on Thursday before getting routed 5-1 by the New Jersey Devils on Saturday. The Devils scored four times in the first period and scored the first goal of the second frame before Derek MacKenzie stopped the bleeding with a power-play tally for the Panthers.

MacKenzie's goal came with 3:29 left in the frame off assists from Scottie Upshall and Brian Campbell.

Roberto Luongo surrendered five goals on 14 shots in less than 23 minutes of action to take the loss. Al Montoya finished up by making 10 saves.

"The first few were a couple of bad bounces there," Luongo said. "Tough start but no excuses. I have to make a couple of saves to keep the team in the game and I didn't do that."

The Senators and Panthers split four meetings a season ago, but Ottawa has won 13 of the previous 17 encounters overall.

The Sens also have won seven of their last 10 in Sunrise.
