Boedker nets hat trick as Coyotes deal Oilers another loss
Oct 16, 2014 - 5:43 AM Glendale, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Mikkel Boedker tallied his first career hat trick and added an assist in the Arizona Coyotes' 7-4 win over the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday.Martin Erat had a goal and an assist, while Kyle Chipchura, Connor Murphy and Rob Klinkhammer each deposited a goal in the win.
Mike Smith, who entered the game 8-0-1 in his last 10 starts against Edmonton, stopped 23-of-27 shots for Arizona.
The Coyotes look to close out their season-opening four-game homestand with a win against the St. Louis Blues on Saturday.
Taylor Hall netted two goals with an assist for Edmonton, which has allowed 23 goals in opening the season with four straight losses.
Ben Scrivens allowed six goals on 28 shots in the setback.
"I can't throw anyone under the bus when I'm playing like that," Scrivens said. "I've got to take care of my own house first."
Murphy's goal 5:08 into the second period gave the hosts a lead, then Erat connected with Klinkhammer just over a minute later for a one-timer out in front to extend the lead to 4-2.
The Oilers trimmed the deficit early in the third period when Hall skated in on an odd-man rush and sent a saucer pass over a sliding Coyotes defender to Mark Arcobello, who one-timed a wrist shot top shelf to make it 4-3.
Boedker answered just before the midway point of the third as he backhanded a shot on net that just trickled through the legs of Scrivens to restore the two-goal margin.
Erat got on the board before Hall registered his second of the night and third of the young season.
Boedker then capped his stellar night by skating in alone on an empty net and sliding the puck in for the final margin.
"It was a sloppy game," Arizona coach Dave Trippett said. "I'm talking about our side. I would have liked to see us be more sound. We got away with it tonight, but it was a sloppy game. When (Boedker) is getting opportunities, he takes advantage of them. That's a big plus for us, especially tonight."
A turnover by the Coyotes in their defensive zone helped Edmonton open the scoring 1:25 into the game. Arizona attempted to get the puck out, but Nikita Nikitin kept it alive and threw a shot toward the net, where Jordan Eberle found an open Hall out in front for his second goal of the season.
Nikitin was whistled for holding later in the first, and Boedker made the Oilers pay, receiving a long pass from Keith Yandle at the blue line and flicking a backhand past Scrivens to tie the game at 1-1.
Scrivens was then caught behind his own net with just over six minutes left in the opening frame, and Chipchura gave the Coyotes their first regulation lead of the season by depositing the puck into the back of the net to make it 2-1.
"They got up on us and we did a good job of coming back," said Yandle. "It's great to see what (Boedker) is doing."
Edmonton kept the high-scoring first period going with a goal from Mark Fayne with 2:10 remaining. Leon Draisaitl dumped the puck on net just inside the blue line and the disc deflected off the end board out to Fayne, who slapped it past an unprepared Smith to tie the score at 2-2.
