Blues hit the road to battle Kings
Oct 16, 2014 - 2:47 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The St. Louis Blues hit the road for the first time this season on Thursday night as they kick off a three-game swing versus the Los Angeles Kings. The Blues have played just a pair of games on the young season, splitting home contests against the New York Rangers and Calgary Flames. They were edged 3-2 by the Rangers on Oct. 9, then bested the Flames 4-1 on Saturday.
Joakim Lindstrom, David Backes, Alex Pietrangelo and Vladimir Tarasenko all scored in the win, while Paul Stastny and Kevin Shattenkirk had three assists each.
Brian Elliott made 23 saves in the victory.
"We played simple early (and) we played hard," Shattenkirk said. "We did the things that make us successful."
After opening the season with back-to-back losses, one in overtime, the Kings have won the first two of a six-game homestand. They were last in action on Tuesday, posting a 6-1 win over the Edmonton Oilers.
Tanner Pearson had two goals and an assist, while linemates Jeff Carter and Tyler Toffoli had a goal and an assist each in Darryl Sutter's 100th regular- season victory as the club's head coach.
Justin Williams and Dustin Brown added goals for the Kings, who posted their seventh straight win over the Oilers. Jonathan Quick came within 21 seconds of a shutout, making 31 saves.
"We got up early and we didn't take our foot of the pedal, we kept going," Quick said.
The Kings rolled without forward Marian Gaborik, who missed the game due to an upper-body injury.
Defenseman Jake Muzzin also has yet to suit up for a game this season because of an upper-body ailment, but that didn't stop Los Angeles from signing the 25-year-old to a five-year extension on Wednesday. Muzzin had five goals and 19 assists in 76 games last regular season and added six goals and 12 points in 26 playoff games.
The Kings have won six of seven and eight of their last 10 versus the Blues, including four straight in Los Angeles.
Quick is 6-8-1 with a 2.28 goals against average and .918 save percentage in his career when facing the Blues, while Elliott has gone 1-4-1 with a 2.58 GAA and .913 save percentage versus the Kings.
