Stars shock Penguins with two late goals
Oct 17, 2014 - 3:15 AM Pittsburgh, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Tyler Seguin scored on the power play with 2.9 seconds left to lift the Dallas Stars over the Pittsburgh Penguins, 3-2, on Thursday.Trailing 2-1 late in the third period, Dallas forward Jason Spezza appeared to tie the game with 3:33 to go. But Seguin made contact with Marc-Andre Fleury and the goal was called off.
The Stars took out their frustration with 2:57 left as Jamie Benn scored the tying goal. Benn batted in a loose puck in front of the net to make it 2-2.
Dallas went on the power play with 9.6 seconds remaining when Sidney Crosby went off for tripping. Spezza then made a beautiful cross-ice pass to Seguin, whose wrist shot from the left circle got past Fleury.
Antoine Roussel scored in the second stanza for the Stars, who snapped a six- game losing streak against the Penguins in Pittsburgh. Kari Lehtonen made 27 saves.
Crosby and Chris Kunitz scored power-play goals in the first period for the Penguins, who fell to 2-1-0 on the young season. Fleury stopped 25-of-28 shots.
"I think that the first two periods were pretty decent," said Crosby. "I thought in the third, they're down one, they're coming harder. We weren't able to get that next one to generate some chances. We probably made it a little too easy on them, turning the puck over a bit.
"To not even get a point out of that, I think it's a little frustrating."
Pittsburgh forward Pascal Dupuis was taken off the ice on a stretcher in the second period. Dupuis was cross-checked in the back by Stars defenseman Alex Goligoski with 6:58 remaining in the middle stanza. Dupuis fell to the ice in front of the Dallas crease and was struck near the base of his neck by a Kris Letang shot.
The 35-year-old Dupuis immediately motioned to the bench for assistance. He gave a thumbs-up gesture with his left hand as he was wheeled off the ice.
"He got hit by the shot, was knocked down in front of the net," said Pittsburgh coach Mike Johnston after the game. "I didn't see the replay on it yet. I don't have any more information on it yet from the trainers other than he said that he had some numbness in his arm and it was coming back, so that was a real positive sign. But I haven't heard anything more. I'm sure they're doing a lot of tests on him right now."
The Penguins entered the game with the NHL's best power play. They went 2- for-4 with the extra man in the opening stanza to grab a 2-0 lead.
Crosby scored on the power play at the 2:28 mark. His pass attempt from the high slot was tipped into the Dallas net by Jordie Benn of the Stars.
Forward Evgeni Malkin, who was credited with an assist on the goal, surpassed Rick Kehoe for sole possession of fourth place on the team's all-time points list with 637.
The Penguins added another power-play goal at 7:46 when Kunitz put home a rebound.
"I thought we did a real poor job of controlling our emotions," said Stars coach Lindy Ruff. "We took a couple penalties we didn't need to take and they've always had a dangerous power play. They got a little bit of a break on the first power-play goal, but some power plays after that, they were zipping it around pretty good."
Roussel got the Stars on the board at the 6:08 mark of the second. He scored from the right circle following Vernon Fiddler's pass from behind the net.
