Iginla, Avs thump Canucks
Oct 25, 2014 - 3:56 AM Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Jarome Iginla notched two goals and an assist to lead the Colorado Avalanche to a 7-3 victory over the Vancouver Canucks on Friday.Matt Duchene had a goal and two assists, Erik Johnson gave a goal and an assist, while Jamie McGinn, Daniel Briere and Gabriel Landeskog all had a goal for the Avalanche, who snapped a four-game losing streak.
Semyon Varlamov stopped 26-of-29 shots for Colorado, which won for just the second time in eight games on the young season.
"We've had some adversity this year and thought we were well-equipped to handle it," said Duchene. "While this has been going on, our habits have been good. We knew the goals would start coming and now we hope the floodgates will stay open."
Daniel Sedin had a goal and an assist while Alexandre Burrows and Henrik Sedin also scored for the Canucks, who have lost three of four. Eddie Lack allowed all seven goals on 48 shots.
"We are strong enough to score a lot of goals, but we can't keep giving up five, six, seven a game," said Henrik Sedin. "We did not play well tonight, we just weren't sharp enough."
It took all of 10 seconds for Vancouver to get on the board as a clearing attempt along the boards was intercepted by Daniel Sedin, who fed a quick pass to the slot where his brother shot it in.
Colorado tied the game at 14:28 of the first when Duchene sent a pass from behind the net to the front where Iginla lifted a backhander into the right corner for his first goal with the team.
The Canucks, though, took a 2-1 lead into the second period as Burrows scored on a shot down low with 2:37 left. The goal was initially waived off as it appeared he kicked it in with his right skate, but replay showed that he got a stick on it before it went into the net.
Colorado again tied the game at 6:06 of the second after Duchene flew down the right wing and sent a backhand pass over to the inside of the circle where McGinn one-timed it home.
Skating 5-on-3, the Avalanche took their first lead of the game on Johnson's blast from the slot at 8:48 of the second.
Just 2:05 into the third, Colorado padded its advantage off a left circle faceoff win that saw Briere knock in the rebound of a Tyson Barrie shot for a 4-2 advantage.
Skating on a breakaway, Duchene notched his third goal of the season with a soft backhand between the pads of Lack at 5:55 for a 5-2 lead.
The Canucks briefly made it a two-goal game on Daniel Sedin's second of the year, a one-timer blast from the high slot at 10:09, but the Avalanche got it back three minutes later on Landeskog's one-timer from the top of the left circle that beat Lack cleanly.
Iginla's goal in the final minute accounted for the final score.
