Surging Habs take on Red Wings

Nov 16, 2014 - 3:57 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The streaking Montreal Canadiens will aim for a sixth consecutive victory when they visit the Detroit Red Wings in Sunday's Original Six battle at Joe Louis Arena.

Montreal was in action Saturday night and completed a perfect 4-0 homestand with a 6-3 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers. The triumph marked Michel Therrien's 300th win as an NHL head coach.

"I only knew it right before the game," Therrien admitted. "I'm not into that, or interested in most stats, but I really started out young in the NHL and was able to work with very good teams during my career. It's really due to the guys who played for me."

P.A. Parenteau and Dale Weise each registered a pair of goals, while Carey Price earned the victory with a 26-save effort. Alex Galchenyuk added three assists, with Tomas Plekanec, Sergei Gonchar, Max Pacioretty and Andrei Markov totaling two helpers each.

David Desharnais and P.K. Subban also lit the lamp for the Canadiens, who moved one point ahead of Tampa Bay for first place in the Atlantic Division with the victory.

Montreal is on the road for one game before returning to the Bell Centre for a two-game homestand beginning with Tuesday's showdown against Pittsburgh. The Habs are 5-2-1 on the road this season compared to a stellar 8-2-0 mark at home.

Detroit, meanwhile, is 6-1-2 as the home club this season and recently has experienced tremendous success against the Canadiens at Joe Louis Arena. Although Montreal recorded a 5-4 win the last time the clubs met in the Motor City on March 27, the Red Wings have claimed nine of the past 12 encounters at the Joe.

The Canadiens have won three straight overall in this series and are 4-1-1 in the past six encounters.

The Red Wings will try to win consecutive games for the first time this month after beating a visiting Chicago club on Friday. It was the second win in three outings for Detroit, which last put together two straight wins when it ended October with victories over Washington and Los Angeles.

Detroit notched a 4-1 win over the Blackhawks with Luke Glendening tallying a goal and an assist to help the Wings improve to 2-0-1 on a four-game homestand that ends tonight.

Johan Franzen, Tomas Tatar and Brendan Smith also scored for Detroit, while Jimmy Howard made 25 saves in the win.

"It was the first time in four or five games that we looked fast," Red Wings head coach Mike Babcock said. "We got engaged and really got going as the game went on."

The Red Wings welcomed star forward Pavel Datsyuk back to the lineup on Friday after he missed the previous two games due to a groin injury. Datsyuk registered an assist and has 11 points on five goals and six helpers in nine games this season.
