Preds tie goal record in 9-2 win over Leafs

Nov 19, 2014 - 6:46 AM Toronto, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - Taylor Beck had two goals and one assist and the Nashville Predators tied a franchise record for goals scored in a 9-2 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday.

Eric Nystrom, Mike Ribeiro, Filip Forsberg, Calle Jarnkrok, Roman Josi and Colin Wilson also scored for Nashville in the rout, which included a four-goal flurry in the first 5:14 of the third period to make it 8-0.

"We got the bounces," Predators forward Derek Roy said. "We skated well and we could've had more."

Pekka Rinne made 29 saves and the Predators improved to 5-1 in their last six games.

Each of their last five had been decided by one goal.

Jonathan Bernier gave up three goals on 12 shots in the first period and James Reimer allowed six on 25 shots the rest of the way in Toronto's third loss in a row.

"I don't think it was the coach. It was the players," Maple Leafs defenseman Roman Polak said. "We played awful out there."

Nashville tied the franchise record for most goals in a game set during a 9-4 win in Pittsburgh on March 4, 2004. They also had a 9-4 victory over Calgary on March 18, 2006.

Their four-goal outburst in the third period turned this game into a laugher.

The goals included Forsberg using his left skate to deflect Shea Weber's slap shot from the high right side. The play was reviewed and upheld as a good goal because Forsberg directed the puck with his skate rather than kick it in.

Fans at Air Canada Centre gave Reimer a sarcastic cheer moments later when he made a routine save to stop play.

Mike Santorelli scored at 8:18 to get Toronto on the board and Nazem Kadri added a goal at 10:33.

The Maple Leafs were coming off a 6-2 loss in Buffalo on Saturday and have given up more goals in their last two games than in their previous five.

Beck got it started 1:52 into the game on a wrist shot from the right circle.

Roy collected his 500th NHL point and first goal as a Predator 8:22 later after he and Matt Cullen fended off checks from Cody Franson and Dion Phaneuf.

Cullen fought off Franson in the right circle to get the pass into the low slot and Roy whacked it in despite being draped by Phaneuf.

Beck scored his second goal on a power play with 3:11 left in the first to give the Predators a 3-0 lead, beating Bernier on a rebound after Forsberg's slap shot hit him while he screened the Toronto goaltender in front of the crease.

Nystrom scored the only goal of the second period with 1:15 left when he beat Reimer's glove on the far side with a wrister from the left circle.

The single-game record for goals allowed by the Maple Leafs is 14 by Buffalo on March 19, 1981 ... Weber had three assists ... The Maple Leafs continue a three-game homestand on Thursday against Tampa Bay ... The Predators remain on the road to play Ottawa on Thursday.
