Blue Jackets continue to roll, beat Caps in OT
Dec 12, 2014 - 3:46 AM Washington, DC (SportsNetwork.com) - Nick Foligno scored a power-play goal with 18.8 seconds left in overtime as the Columbus Blue Jackets beat the Washington Capitals 3-2 on Thursday to extend their win streak to five games. The Blue Jackets went on the power play with 1:57 to play when Jason Chimera was called for interference.
After Sergei Bobrovsky made two huge short-handed saves, Jack Johnson, who had drawn the penalty, dished to Foligno for a one-timer from the right circle. The puck sailed over Braden Holtby's glove, giving Foligno his second goal of the game.
Bobrovsky finished with 39 saves, while Holtby stopped 20-of-23 shots.
The Capitals were seeking a fourth straight win.
Holtby kept the game tied with a glove save on Cam Atkinson early in the third period.
Washington grabbed a 2-1 lead when Troy Brouwer sneaked out from behind the net to tip Matt Niskanen's point shot at 9:20.
Kevin Connauton, who scored the overtime game-winner in Columbus' 3-2 triumph against Philadelphia on Tuesday, tied it with a one-timer from the point at 10:59.
The Blue Jackets killed a late penalty to force overtime.
"We created chances. We had a lot of traffic in front of them and (Bobrovsky was still able to make saves," said Capitals defenseman Mike Green, who returned to the lineup after missing seven games with an upper-body injury.
Quick strikes were common during the Capitals' recent surge and that trend continued Thursday with the team converting on an early power play. John Carlson fired a shot from the slot that Eric Fehr tipped past Bobrovsky 3:19 into the game.
It was the fourth straight game that Washington scored in the first five minutes of the first period.
The Capitals at one point held a 13-1 shot advantage, but couldn't build on their lead thanks to Bobrovsky.
"It wasn't the start that we wanted but we found a way to get our legs and get back into the game in large part because our goalie made some big saves for us," said Columbus head coach Todd Richards.
Foligno beat Holtby on a long wrist shot with 4:24 remaining in the first to tie it 1-1.
Both teams were 0-for-2 on the power play in a scoreless second period during which Washington had a 15-4 edge in shots.
