Maple Leafs beat Red Wings 4-1
Dec 14, 2014 - 5:47 AM Toronto, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - Jonathan Bernier made 27 saves and the Toronto Maple Leafs scored four unanswered goals for a 4-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday night. The goals from James van Riemsdyk, Richard Panik, Morgan Rielly and an empty- netter from Nazem Kadri gave the Maple Leafs their first four-game winning streak of the season.
It includes back-to-back victories over the Red Wings, who fell to Toronto 2-1 in a shootout on Wednesday.
"We were much more energetic," said Maple Leafs coach Randy Carlyle. "We were fortunate, obviously, that they played last night. They're a dangerous hockey club. We were able to stick with it even though they scored the first goal."
Saturday marked the fifth and final meeting of the season between the Atlantic Division foes. The Maple Leafs won the last three after the Red Wings swept a home-and-home in October.
Niklas Kronwall scored for Detroit and Petr Mrazek gave up three goals on 40 shots.
The Red Wings have lost three in a row for the second time this season. They were coming off a 3-2 shootout loss to Florida on Friday.
The Maple Leafs took a 2-1 lead with 2:10 remaining in the second period after Korbinian Holzer stole the puck in the Toronto zone and banked a pass off the neutral-zone boards to Panik, who skated in alone against Mrazek and deked to his backhand to beat the Detroit goalie through the legs.
Rielly made it 3-1 on a wrist shot from the left circle that squeaked through Mrazek's left arm and torso on the far side 1:42 into the third period and Kadri scored into an empty net with 3:14 remaining.
Earlier, the teams traded power-play goals a minute apart in the first period.
Kronwall's one-timer from the point off a pass from Johan Franzen gave the Red Wings a 1-0 lead at 15:27 but the Maple Leafs tied it when Phil Kessel's shot hit van Riemsdyk standing in front of the crease and deflected in.
