Another long shootout sees Avs nip Red Wings
Dec 22, 2014 - 3:50 AM Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Jarome Iginla scored the decisive goal in the ninth round of the shootout as the Colorado Avalanche edged the Detroit Red Wings 2-1 at Joe Louis Arena.Nathan MacKinnon and Matt Duchene scored on Colorado's first two chances in the tiebreaker, but the Red Wings stayed alive with goals from Gustav Nyquist and Tomas Tatar in rounds two and three.
Detroit's Petr Mrazek and Colorado's Calvin Pickard then matched one another save for save until Iginla's goal to begin the ninth round. Pickard then made a right pad save on Brendan Smith to secure the victory.
Pickard finished with 34 saves for the Avalanche, who have won back-to-back games for the first time since Nov. 22-25 and concluded their road trip at 2-0-1. They have played beyond regulation in four of their last five games, going 3-0-2 over that stretch.
"It was a pretty defensive match for awhile," Pickard said. "It was an exciting shootout too, but it's definitely nice to be on the winning end of it."
Mrazek, starting in place of Jimmy Howard (lower-body injury), made 22 saves for a Detroit team winless in its last six games (0-2-4). The Red Wings have totaled six goals during their current skid.
"I thought Mrazek gave us a great chance," Red Wings head coach Mike Babcock said. "Anytime your goalie makes as many saves as he did, you have to find a way to score some goals."
The teams traded power-play goals in the third period.
Detroit struck first at the 4:52 mark when Riley Sheahan sent a pass from the left corner to the right circle for Pavel Datsyuk, who beat Pickard on the blocker side with a wrist shot.
Pickard had robbed Datsyuk with a glove save during a first-period power play.
Moments after Duchene hit the post, Tomas Jurco was called for interference following a faceoff in the Colorado zone. The Avalanche converted 10 seconds into the man advantage as Erik Johnson scored on a one-timer from atop the left circle with 4:15 left in the frame.
