Doan lifts Coyotes over Ducks in SO

Dec 28, 2014 - 5:01 AM Glendale, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Captains are expected to produce in big situations, but this seemed out of Shane Doan's control.

Doan broke his stick, but was the only skater to score in a four-round shootout as the Arizona Coyotes beat the Anaheim Ducks 2-1 on Saturday night, knocking off the NHL's top team in a goofy ending.

The blade of Doan's stick snapped off as he fired a shot at Frederik Andersen, who got a piece of the splintered wood with his shoulder but whiffed on the puck as it trickled -- tamely -- past his left pad and inside the goal post.

After Devan Dubnyk stoned Ryan Getzlaf at the other end to seal the win, Doan was all smiles.

"I think that's the old exploding stick trick," he told a TV reporter on the ice after being named the top star.

Zbynek Michalek scored his first goal of the season for the Coyotes, who got their fourth win in the last 14 games (4-8-2). Dubnyk made 36 saves, including 18 in the third period.

Arizona has won two in a row at home after dropping nine straight.

Rene Bourque scored for Anaheim, which is 2-2-1 since a seven-game winning streak. Andersen had 28 saves, but was thrown by Doan's fluky shootout goal.

"For a split second, I followed his blade and the puck goes the other way," he said. "It's a bad bounce but you can't do much about it."

Both goals came within a 73-second span in the first period. Getzlaf set up Bourque with a pass into the slot to open the scoring and Michalek tied it at 10:29 with a blast from the high right side that was too much for Andersen.
