Sutter's late marker lifts Pens over Canes

Jan 1, 2015 - 6:02 AM Pittsburgh, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Brandon Sutter scored the winning goal late in the third period to lift the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 2-1 win over the Carolina Hurricanes.

Chris Kunitz had the other goal for the Penguins, who snapped a four-game losing streak. Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 24 shots in the win.

Eric Staal scored the only goal of the game for the Hurricanes, who have dropped their past three games. Cam Ward allowed both goals on 39 shots in the loss.

"You've got to get more than one goal if you want to win," said Carolina head coach Bill Peters. "We had our chances, just didn't put it away."

With time winding down, the Pens took the lead as Beau Bennett chipped a bouncing puck from the low left circle to the slot where a wrister from Sutter tipped off a Hurricane before finding the back of the net with 1:42 to play.

"We stuck with it all night and any time you get a late goal like that it's always a big boost," said Sutter. "Our defense was solid all night and the goaltending was great. All in all a great game."

Carolina got Ward off the ice late for an extra attacker, but was unable to generate any good opportunities.

Each team scored in the first period, with Carolina striking first when Staal took a pass in the slot and beat Fleury with a wrister for his ninth of the year.

Pittsburgh, though, tied the game with just 21.9 seconds left after Kunitz grabbed Bennett's pass in the slot and snapped it in.

Ward was the busier of the two goaltenders in the second period, stopping 17 shots while Fleury made seven saves.
