Rangers host Sabres aiming to stay hot
Jan 3, 2015 - 3:14 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The New York Rangers take aim at their 10th victory in 11 games on Saturday night as they welcome the Buffalo Sabres to Madison Square Garden.After having an eight-game winning streak snapped with a one-goal loss at Dallas on Monday, the Rangers rebounded to top the Florida Panthers 5-2 on New Year's Eve. Martin St. Louis and Dominic Moore tallied in the third period to help get the Rangers back on track.
Chris Kreider, Derick Brassard and Ryan McDonagh also lit the lamp for the Rangers, who are 11-3-0 in their past 14 games. Derek Stepan had three assists and Henrik Lundqvist posted 18 saves.
New York's surge has pulled it into the second wild card position in the Eastern Conference.
"It's good to get back to playing the way we want to play," McDonagh said. "Overall, it's a good feeling to close out the year here with a big win."
The Rangers now look to open 2015 with a fifth victory in a row over the Sabres. New York also has topped Buffalo in 10 of the previous 14 encounters while taking three straight at home.
Lundqvist is 15-10-2 in his career versus Buffalo with a 2.23 goals against average and .922 save percentage.
The Sabres are likely to face Lundqvist tonight after getting dominated by Florida's Roberto Luongo in last night's 2-0 setback to the visiting Panthers. Luongo made 30 saves to record the shutout.
Michal Neuvirth gave up both goals in the first period and made 31 saves for the Sabres, who have dropped three straight and seven of eight. They have been outscored 12-3 over their past three games.
"You have one bad period and it's really tough to catch up," Sabres head coach Ted Nolan said. "Our first period was God-awful."
Buffalo begins a four-game road trip tonight having lost six in a row as the visiting team.
Jhonas Enroth may get the start in net for the Sabres and is 2-2-1 versus the Rangers with a 2.57 GAA and .909 save percentage in five games with four starts.
