Hendricks scores twice as Oilers upset Islanders

Jan 5, 2015 - 7:10 AM Edmonton, AB (SportsNetwork.com) - Matt Hendricks tallied twice and Jordan Eberle tied a franchise record with his lone marker as Edmonton shocked the New York Islanders by a 5-2 score at Rexall Place.

Derek Roy and Matt Fraser also supplied offense for the Oilers, who picked up their first regulation home victory since Dec. 7 against San Jose.

"There is more energy in the room right now and you can just sense that we have been knocking on the doorstep the last few games," Hendricks said.

Ben Scrivens came through with a 31-save performance.

Johnny Boychuk picked up a goal and assisted on the other for the Islanders, who could have vaulted over idle Pittsburgh back into sole possession of first place in the Metropolitan Division with a single point.

"We gave them three gifts and an empty-netter. We were physical, we did a lot of good things, but at the end of the day it's about execution and there are some guys that need to look in the mirror," Isles coach Jack Capuano said.

Jaroslav Halak surrendered four goals on 22 shots.

Hendricks provided the lone score of the first period, beating Halak with 3:01 remaining. Rob Klinkhammer pressured the Isles goaltender behind the net and created the turnover which led to the goal.

Edmonton assumed a 2-0 edge off the second-period faceoff. Taylor Hall received the puck off the draw on the left wing and trapped three New York players near the boards in the offensive zone before slipping a cross-ice pass for Eberle's successful shot.

Boychuk's blast on a power play halved the visitors' deficit with 3:41 gone, but that was as close as they got.

Roy picked up his first goal with the Oilers at 2:33 of the third period, then Hendricks and Fraser closed out the scoring on tallies 17 seconds apart in the game's final 2 1/2 minutes.

Brock Nelson made the result a little more respectable for New York with 31 seconds to play.

Edmonton's three-goal decision tied a season-high for margin of victory along with a 6-3 win over Carolina on Oct. 24 and a 3-0 result against Montreal three days later ... Eberle's score was the fastest to start a period in Oilers history since Mark Messier beat Chicago (5-4) with a goal eight seconds into overtime on Nov. 19, 1989 at Northlands Coliseum ... The Islanders continue a western Canadian trip in Vancouver on Tuesday.
