Late goal gives Sharks win over Jets

Jan 6, 2015 - 4:56 AM Winnipeg, MB (SportsNetwork.com) - Marc-Edouard Vlasic's goal with just 4.5 seconds to play gave the San Jose Sharks a 3-2 win over the Winnipeg Jets.

The game appeared headed to overtime, but a right circle faceoff win by Joe Pavelski saw Logan Couture dig out the loose puck and pass it over to the left circle where Vlasic wristed it high for the winner.

Brent Burns posted a goal and an assist while Melker Karlsson also had a goal for the Sharks, who had lost four of five coming into the game. Antti Niemi allowed both goals on 19 shots in the victory.

"I couldn't be happier obviously to get the win and fix what was broken," said San Jose head coach Todd McLellan. "We didn't play very well against St. Louis the other night and this Winnipeg team plays a similar game, heavy, hard, and a lot of pinching."

Andrew Ladd and Jay Harrison both scored for the Jets, who have lost three of their last four. Michael Hutchinson allowed three goals on 37 shots in the loss.

"Tonight I just didn't think we were at the level we've been at pretty much all year in the first 30," said Winnipeg head coach Paul Maurice. "Other than their power plays I don't think they were on us at all or we were overwhelmed. I have a higher expectation of what we're capable of."

San Jose scored during a four-minute minor as a right circle faceoff win back to the point saw the puck one-touched over to the high slot where Burns one- timed it home for his 11th of the year at 2:53 of the first.

Skating on the power play later in the first, the Jets tied the game as a quick pass from the left wing to the slot by Bryan Little was one-timed in by Ladd.

The Sharks went back on top 4:14 into the second as Pavelski threw a shot on net from the right point that Karlsson knocked in for his third of the year.

The Jets struck again on the power play to tie the game as a rush play into the Sharks end was finished off on a one-timer by Harrison at 4:03 of the third.
