Bruins dominate punchless Devils

Jan 9, 2015 - 4:55 AM Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Milan Lucic potted a pair of goals in support of a lightly tested Niklas Svedberg in the Boston Bruins' 3-0 victory over the New Jersey Devils.

Boston's second win in as many nights came even easier than the final score indicated, as the Bruins put up 43 shots to New Jersey's 14 to make Svedberg's second career shutout a relatively stress-free one.

Carl Soderberg added a goal to help Boston record a point for a seventh consecutive home game (4-0-3).

"I thought right away that we had a strong game," said Bruins forward Patrice Bergeron. "We limited their chances and their shots on net."

After putting up nine goals in back-to-back wins over Philadelphia and Buffalo coming in, the Devils generated little offense on this night. Cory Schneider managed to keep New Jersey in it most of the way by stopping an outstanding 40-of-42 attempts.

"You have to get shots. We didn't get shots," said Devils acting head coach Lou Lamoriello.

The Bruins outshot New Jersey by a whopping 18-3 count in the first period, though they weren't able to beat Schneider until converting on their third power play chance of the stanza.

With Jaromir Jagr in the box for hooking, Lucic broke the scoreless tie by launching a well-placed long drive into the lower left corner of the Devils' net 1:10 prior to the initial intermission.

Boston continued to dominate puck possession in the second period and extended the lead near the midway mark of the frame. After Chris Kelly knocked New Jersey's Mark Fraser off the puck in the Devils' zone, Soderberg collected the loose disc and fired it over Schneider's shoulder for a 2-0 advantage.

The Devils mustered just four shots for the middle session, though they nearly halved their deficit when Scott Gomez's wrister clanged off the post late in the period.

New Jersey continued to struggle offensively over the final 20 minutes, with Lucic putting the finishing touches on the win with an empty-netter with 11.7 seconds remaining.

Game Notes

Boston's Loui Eriksson sat out the game after injuring his right hand in Wednesday's 3-2 overtime win over Pittsburgh ... The Devils have lost six straight (0-5-1) on the road, the club's longest skid as the visitor since a seven-game slide to begin last season ... Three players -- Kelly, Bergeron and New Jersey's Mike Cammalleri -- skated in their 700th career NHL game ... The Bruins improved to 11-3-0 this season in games in which they score in the final two minutes of a period.
