Boedker, Coyotes handle Jets

Jan 9, 2015 - 5:59 AM Glendale, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Mikkel Boedker's three-point night lifted the Arizona Coyotes to a 4-1 win over the Winnipeg Jets on Thursday.

Boedker finished with two goals and an assist, Shane Doan tallied a goal and two helpers and Oliver Ekman-Larsson also lit the lamp for the Coyotes, who bounced back from a 6-0 loss to the Blues on Tuesday.

"Our goaltender was excellent and our special teams were strong," Arizona head coach Dave Tippett said. "We were just way more competitive tonight."

Mike Smith was stellar in between the pipes, stopping 34-of-35 shots to earn just his second win since Dec. 1.

Mathieu Perreault supplied Winnipeg's lone goal and Ondrej Pavelec gave up all four goals on 30 shots.

"Too many penalties. They were just better than us on special teams," Perreault said. "They just kind of took the wind out of us."

The Coyotes wasted no time getting on the board after they went on the power play just 23 seconds into the game on Bryan Little's tripping minor. Antoine Vermette gathered Ekman-Larsson's blocked shot in front and dished it out of the scrum to Boedker, who wristed it high into the net just 1:10 into the contest.

Just over two minutes later, Ekman-Larson skated in from the right point behind the play and buried a Doan feed for another Arizona power-play goal and a 2-0 lead.

Late in the first, the Jets had a power-play goal waved off after Blake Wheeler interfered with Smith in the crease and were unable to convert on a lengthy 5-on-3 power play.

Arizona took a 3-0 lead with another power-play marker. Doan tapped home the rebound of Michael Stone's slap shot with 4:25 to play in the second.

Perreault got Winnipeg on the board 6:49 into the final period. Andrew Ladd relayed Mark Scheifele's cross-ice pass through his legs to Perreault, who beat Smith with a quick shot from the right side.

Boedker capped the scoring on a wrister with 11:05 to play.
