Roy leads Oilers over Blackhawks

Jan 10, 2015 - 6:55 AM Edmonton, AB (SportsNetwork.com) - Derek Roy finished with a goal and two assists, helping the Edmonton Oilers defeat the Chicago Blackhawks 5-2 on Friday night.

Taylor Hall and Nail Yakupov both had one goal and an assist for the Oilers, who got 19 saves from Ben Scrivens.

Edmonton has gone 3-1-2 over its last six games and beat a Central Division opponent for the first time this season (1-4-5).

Brandon Saad scored both goals for Chicago, which posted a 7-1 win over the Oilers in its last trip to Rexall Place on Nov. 22.

"We had enough chances tonight. We didn't give up a ton," said Chicago coach Joel Quenneville.

Antti Raanta stopped 17 shots in the loss.

Yakupov carried the puck on a 2-on-0 rush with Hall and fired a backhander past Raanta's glove to make it 4-2 with 3:09 remaining in the game.

Hall added an empty-netter 43 seconds later.

"I thought we did a good job making plays, getting pucks out and not giving them many chances," Roy said about the way the Oilers handled a third-period lead.

Pressure by Jonathan Toews forced a turnover and triggered an odd-man rush by the Blackhawks. Scrivens stopped a shot by Toews, but Saad buried the rebound at 7:34 of the first period. The goal was Saad's 100th NHL point.

The Oilers responded 1:18 later on Benoit Pouliot's goal from the doorstep off a Chicago giveaway.

Roy drove the net during an Edmonton power play and tapped in a feed from Teddy Purcell to make it 2-1 with 6:25 left in the first.

Saad banged in a rebound on another 2-on-1 break, this time with Marian Hossa, to draw the Blackhawks even at 5:47 of the second period.

The Oilers quickly went back in front when Jeff Petry joined the rush and put home a rebound at 6:33.

Game Notes

Chicago had won the three previous meetings in Edmonton by a 16-3 margin ... Hossa and Toews both had two assists.
