Holtby, Caps blank Kings

Feb 4, 2015 - 5:54 AM Washington, DC (SportsNetwork.com) - Braden Holtby made 27 saves for his sixth shutout of the season to guide the Washington Capitals to a 4-0 win over the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday.

Troy Brouwer had two goals, Nicklas Backstrom had a goal and an assist and Eric Fehr lit the lamp for the Capitals, who had dropped six of seven coming into the game.

"Our team is playing very structured right now," said Holtby. "I think that little losing streak was a wake up call for us. Now we need to get some wins together and move up in the standings."

Jonathan Quick allowed all four goals on 27 shots for the Kings, who have lost six of their last seven.

"We made too many mistakes in this game," said Los Angeles head coach Darryl Sutter. "When you go into the third down 2-0 that's a tough task in this building."

Washington took a 1-0 lead with 2:49 to play in the first period when Evgeny Kuznetsov sent a pass from the left boards to the slot where Brouwer one-timed it home.

It was Brouwer again for the next goal, this one coming at 16:36 of the second. On the power play, Mike Green blasted a one-timer from the high slot that Brouwer was able to get a stick on for his 15th of the season.

The Capitals scored a pair of goals separated by 59 seconds in the third with the first coming at 5:50.

A turnover in the LA end saw Alex Ovechkin grab the disc at the top of the left circle and pass it over to the slot for Marcus Johansson, who one-touched it back to the left and Backstrom wristed it home.

Another turnover was picked up by Fehr along the left point and he skated low before lifting a backhand into the net for his 16th of the season.

Washington plays in Ottawa on Thursday ... Los Angeles plays the third game of a five-game road trip in Florida on Thursday ... Washington was 1-for-3 on the power play and Los Angeles was 0-for-1 ... Holtby has 17 shutouts in his career.
