Blue Jackets' offense erupts against streaking Blues
Feb 7, 2015 - 3:42 AM Columbus, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Nick Foligno posted two goals and an assist as the Columbus Blue Jackets ended the St. Louis Blues' lengthy point streak with an emphatic 7-1 win on Friday.Ryan Johansen tallied a short-handed goal and two assists and Corey Tropp and Scott Hartnell each had a goal and a helper while Matt Calvert and Cam Atkinson also scored for the Blue Jackets, who ended a three-game skid.
"To win 7-1 leaves you with a good feeling," Columbus head coach Todd Richards said. "I think we got contributions from all the lines tonight."
Curtis McElhinney made 32 saves to help give the Blues their first regulation loss since Jan. 2.
St. Louis entered the game with seven straight wins and was riding a franchise-long 13-game point streak (12-0-1).
Paul Stastny supplied the Blues' lone goal, Brian Elliott allowed four goals on 14 shots and Jake Allen stopped 16-of-19 shots in relief.
"They outplayed us," St. Louis head coach Ken Hitchcock said. "We looked unfocused at times. We have trended this way for the last three games and it caught up to us."
The Blue Jackets started the scoring 10:44 into the games as Brandon Dubinsky cut to the right circle and fired a shot. Elliott made the save, but Foligno batted the rebound out of the air and into the net.
After Atkinson forced a turnover behind the Blues net, Johansen threw a pass towards the slot, where Hartnell redirected it off the crossbar. Atkinson was there to knock the fluttering puck past Elliott for a 2-0 game with 1:44 left in the first.
Johansen put the Blue Jackets up 3-0 after he raced into the offensive zone on a short-handed breakaway and wristed a shot past Elliott's glove 5:06 into the second.
Just three minutes later, Tropp chased Elliott from the game after he deflected a shot through the netminder's pads for a 4-0 advantage.
St. Louis got on the board as Stastny ripped a sharp-angle shot from the edge of the left circle for a power-play goal with 8:46 left in the middle stanza.
Foligno, however, restored Columbus' four-goal lead with a slap shot five minutes later.
Calvert's deflection of Jack Johnson's shot 5:59 into the third gave the Blue Jackets a 6-1 lead and Hartnell's wrister with 4:39 left accounted for the final margin.
