Bruins edge Isles thanks to Eriksson, Rask
Feb 8, 2015 - 5:46 AM Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Loui Eriksson netted the winner in the latter stages of the third period and Tuukka Rask stopped 39 shots as Boston edged the New York Islanders, 2-1, at TD Garden.Patrice Bergeron recorded the other goal for the Bruins, who have won seven of their last 10.
John Tavares picked up the lone score for the Islanders, while Chad Johnson made 34 saves in the loss.
"It was a tough game and it came down to the third period," Johnson said.
Boston took a 2-1 lead with 7:34 remaining in regulation.
"I like the way we handled the third," Bruins coach Claude Julien said. "We came out there with a little bit more determination."
Chris Kelly carried the puck into the Islanders zone on the left wing and flipped a lead pass for Carl Soderberg as he rushed the crease. Soderberg's tip was stopped by Johnson, but Eriksson was facing away from the net when he backhanded the winner home.
New York failed to find an equalizer with an extra skater in the final 1:28 of play.
Both teams scored on the power play in the first period, as Tavares opened the scoring 54 seconds before the midway point and Bergeron following for the hosts at 13:12.
Rask stopped 16 shots and Johnson turned aside nine in a scoreless second frame.
Game Notes
The Bruins took two of three in the season series ... Both clubs are in action on Sunday, as Boston hosts Montreal and New York heads to Buffalo ... Members of the Super Bowl champion New England Patriots helped with a ceremonial pregame faceoff, with wide receiver Rob Gronkowski drawing a standing ovation for spiking a puck.
