Bruins hope to lean on past success versus Flames

Feb 16, 2015 - 3:43 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The bad news for the Boston Bruins is that they have matched their longest losing streak of the season.

The potential good news is that they get to play the Calgary Flames.

The Bruins try to avoid a fourth straight loss and extend their recent dominance over the Flames on Monday night.

Boston has been outscored 13-6 over a season high-tying three-game slide, the latest setback coming on Friday in the opener of a five-game road trip. The Bruins were defeated 5-2 by the Vancouver Canucks, getting goals from Chris Kelly and Patrice Bergeron.

Tuukka Rask made 20 saves for the Bruins, who have just a three-point lead over the Florida Panthers for the Eastern Conference's second wild card spot.

"It's frustrating as its ever been in my coaching career," Boston head coach Claude Julien said. "We really need our best players to be our best players right now."

His players have been at their best versus the Flames. Boston has outscored Calgary 21-2 over a five-game series winning streak, recording three shutouts in that span.

Rask has won all three of his career starts against the Flames, giving up just one goal on 73 shots faced while recording a pair of shutouts.

Calgary, though, has emerged as surprise contenders this season and is tied with Vancouver for third place in the Pacific Division, but with one more game played.

The Flames won for the fifth time in seven games on Saturday, beating the Canucks 3-2. Sean Monahan scored twice, Lance Bouma had the winning goal early in the third period and Jiri Hudler had a pair of assists.

"We did a great job," Bouma said. "Guys were sacrificing the body, just doing whatever it takes."

In his first start since Jan. 7, Karri Ramo made 28 saves to get his first win since Dec. 4. It came in the opener of a four-game homestand and Ramo will be rewarded with another start tonight.

He beat the Bruins the only other time he faced them, allowing three goals and making 40 saves.
