Hurricanes double up Senators 6-3

Feb 17, 2015 - 5:05 AM Ottawa, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - Andrej Nestrasil had a goal and two assists and the Carolina Hurricanes scored three times on the power play in a 6-3 win over the Ottawa Senators on Monday night.

Senators forward Clarke MacArthur and goaltender Robin Lehner were injured in a scary collision near the end of the second period that knocked both players out of the game and forced officials to end the period early.

Michal Jordan scored his first career NHL goal on a power play for Carolina, which snapped a two-game losing streak.

"It was a huge game for us. I'm really glad we stopped (the losing streak)," Nestrasil said.

Jeff Skinner and Chris Terry also scored with a man-advantage and Nathan Gerbe and Jay McClement added a goal apiece. Cam Ward made 29 saves in the win.

Erik Condra, Mike Hoffman and Cody Ceci scored for the Senators, who had a three-game points streak snapped.

Lehner made 27 saves while he was in and Andrew Hammond stopped just three of the five shots he saw in a little over a period.

"It was a tough situation," Hammond said of coming on in relief. "It's not a great indication of my abilities."

MacArthur was backchecking McClement when both players crashed hard into the Ottawa net, with MacArthur's head making contact with Lehner's body.

After crediting McClement with a goal to give the Hurricanes a 4-3 lead, officials sent the teams to their locker rooms with 53 seconds remaining.

The teams returned after intermission to play the remaining seconds before switching sides for the start of the third period.

Jordan and Terry scored power-play goals 7:16 apart to push Carolina's lead to 6-3. Jordan's first NHL goal came after a pass was deflected to him on the low left side and Terry rifled a one-timer past Hammond from the top of the right circle at 9:49.

Earlier, Nestrasil powered past Senators forward Mark Stone around the back of the net to get off a soft backhand that hit Lehner's stick and went through his legs for a 1-0 Hurricanes lead 6:49 into the game.

Condra buried a rebound past Ward with 1:45 remaining in the period to tie the score for Ottawa.

Skinner then scored on a power play 8:06 into the second period to touch off a wild back-and-forth between the teams.

Hoffman's redirection tied the score at 2-2 for Ottawa before Gerbe gave the Hurricanes another lead at 13:26. Ceci scored on the doorstep to knot it again for Ottawa at 13:58, the third goal in 3:06.

Game Notes

Carolina was 3-for-5 on the power play ... Senators defenseman Marc Methot signed a four-year contract extension with the team worth an average of $4.9 million per year ... The Hurricanes beat the Senators 3-2 on Jan. 17 in Ottawa. The teams will meet one more time this season, on March 17 in Raleigh ... The Hurricanes are home against the New York Islanders on Tuesday ... The Senators continue a five-game homestand on Wednesday against Montreal.
