Benn's hat trick leads Stars over Blues

Feb 18, 2015 - 4:32 AM St. Louis, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - Jamie Benn's first career hat trick led the Dallas Stars in a 4-1 win over the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday.

Cody Eakin also scored and Jason Spezza had three assists for the Stars, who have won four of their last five. Kari Lehtonen stopped 27 shots in the win.

Patrik Berglund scored the only goal of the game for the Blues, who had a three-game winning streak broken. Brian Elliott allowed three goals on six shots before getting pulled early in the first period. Jake Allen stopped 15- of-16 the rest of the way.

"We weren't ready to compete," Blues head coach Ken Hitchcock said. "It's troubling."

It was Benn with the first goal of the game at 2:47 as he took a pass at the right point and skated down to the slot before blasting a shot past Elliott.

At 8:18 of the first, Benn notched his second of the game off a 2-on-1 with Spezza, who skated down the right wing before sending the puck to the left where Benn one-timed it home.

Just 20 second later, Eakin got on the board when he snapped home a rebound from a Ryan Garbutt shot for his 11th of the season.

Skating on the power play, Benn was able to finish off his hat trick on a snap shot from the right circle for his 22nd goal of the season.

"I felt pretty good out there tonight," said Benn. "Nice to get this first one in a win when we're fighting for a playoff spot."

Berglund scored on a wrist shot from the slot with 7:30 to play to spoil Lehtonen's shutout bid.
