Hammond leads Sens over Habs in first career start

Feb 19, 2015 - 5:01 AM Ottawa, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - In his first NHL start and just his third career game, Andrew Hammond made 42 saves to lead the Ottawa Senators to a 4-2 win over the Montreal Canadiens on Wednesday.

Hammond stopped all 13 shots he faced in the first period to settle into the game as Ottawa improved to 2-1-1 on its five-game homestand.

"Once the puck dropped, I felt really comfortable," said Hammond. "Every shot that came my way, I felt like I settled in even more."

Mark Stone tallied a goal and two assists, Erik Karlsson notched two helpers, and Milan Michalek, Jean-Gabriel Pageau and Kyle Turris also scored for the Senators.

The Canadiens lost their three-game road winning streak despite getting 35 saves from Dustin Tokarski.

"It seems like the same story too often," said Pacioretty. "We have to find ways to put more goals up on the board."

Nathan Beaulieu scored his first NHL goal for Montreal, and Max Pacioretty also lit the lamp.

After a back-and-forth first period that ended scoreless, neither team was able to score on a power play in the first half of the second period. Hammond denied Pacioretty on a breakaway for the second time in the game.

Not long after that save, the Senators went up 1-0. Tokarski could not control a rebound with traffic in front of him, and Michalek outmuscled a Canadien to get to the loose puck first.

Just eight seconds later, Montreal scored right off the faceoff. Pacioretty was finally able to beat Hammond on a breakaway, this time set up by Andrei Markov's stretch pass.

After the Senators failed to convert on their second power play, Pageau restored Ottawa's lead when he got behind the defense and Karlsson hit him with a slap-pass he redirected into the net.

Ottawa finally scored on the power play halfway through the third period. Karlsson's slapshot rang off the post, and before Tokarski could find the puck sitting behind him in the crease, Stone knocked it in to create a two-goal margin.

With 5:35 to play, Beaulieu narrowed the gap. His shot was deflected by a defender's stick and skipped off the ice and through traffic into the net.

Turris scored an empty-net goal after P.K. Subban turned the puck over at the blue line.

Ottawa leads the season series 2-1 ... Montreal lost defenseman Alexei Emelin after 20 seconds after he collided with the boards ...
