Cammalleri, Devils double up Canucks

Feb 21, 2015 - 5:13 AM Newark, NJ (SportsNetwork.com) - Mike Cammalleri scored a power-play goal and added an empty-net goal while short-handed to help the New Jersey Devils earn a 4-2 win over the Vancouver Canucks on Friday night at Prudential Center.

Adam Larsson had three assists for New Jersey, and Cory Schneider made 21 saves to register his career-high 21st win of the season and first against the team that drafted him.

"It was nice to finally beat them, I guess, and maybe put that to bed," said Schneider, who was selected by the Canucks in the first round in 2004. "I didn't feel I played poorly against them. I just didn't have the results."

Patrik Elias and Jordin Tootoo also scored for the Devils, who have opened a six-game homestand with back-to-back victories. They ended a four-game skid Tuesday by edging the Buffalo Sabres in a shootout.

Zack Kassian notched his first career two-goal game for Vancouver, which got 23 saves from Eddie Lack.

The Canucks topped the New York Rangers in a shootout on Thursday to begin a five-game road trip.

"You could tell the guys were tired. That's just a fact," said Vancouver coach Willie Desjardins.

Vancouver fell behind 3-0 to New Jersey, but closed to within one early in the third period. Kassian collected a bouncing puck on the rush and flipped it past Schneider's right shoulder from the doorstep at 3:04.

The Canucks had a chance to tie the game when their persistent pressure led to a power play. New Jersey defenseman Marek Zidlicky was called for closing his hand on the puck when he gloved the puck out of the air while in the crease and threw it aside with 3:54 remaining.

Lack was pulled to make it a 6-on-4 advantage, but Cammalleri fired the puck into the vacated net with 2:07 left.

Elias gave the Devils a 1-0 lead at 7:12 into the game when he fired a shot from outside the right circle near the half boards past Lack on the short side.

Schneider needed to make only two saves in the first period.

Early in the second period, Tootoo and Cammalleri scored goals in a span of 2:08 to put New Jersey up 3-0.

Tootoo took a pass from Larsson as he skated through the neutral zone and beat Lack with a shot from the left circle 50 seconds into the second.

Less than a minute later, the Devils went on a power play after Linden Vey was whistled for hooking. Cammalleri beat Lack on a one-timer from above the right circle at 2:58.

Kassian put Vancouver on the board at 6:23 of the second, tapping in Daniel Sedin's pass as he streaked down the middle.

The Devils snapped a six-game losing streak against the Canucks ... New Jersey improved to 9-2-3 in its last 14 home games ... The Canucks lost for just the second time in 13 games against Metropolitan Division opponents this season ... Vancouver forward Alexandre Burrows sat out with a lower-body injury ...
