Ducks smother Flames with 5 goals in 3rd

Feb 21, 2015 - 5:34 AM Calgary, AB (SportsNetwork.com) - Andrew Cogliano, Ryan Getzlaf and Hampus Lindholm each tallied a goal and an assist as the Anaheim Ducks used a five- goal third period to claim a 6-3 victory over the Calgary Flames on Friday.

Kyle Palmieri, Francois Beauchemin and Jakob Silfverberg also scored, Patrick Maroon supplied two assists and John Gibson made 25 saves in his fourth consecutive start for the Ducks, who snapped a two-game skid.

"It's nice," Getzlaf said of the win. "When you're working and playing the way we did tonight, it's nice to get rewarded for it."

Matt Stajan, Lance Bouma and Sean Monahan all scored and Jonas Hiller allowed five goals on 37 shots in Calgary's second straight loss.

"Tonight the Ducks deserve credit," Flames head coach Bob Hartley said. "The more the game was progressing the stronger they were getting."

Beauchemin kickstarted Anaheim's dominant third period by tying the game 6:13 into the stanza after he crashed the net off the rush and wristed Cogliano's feed by Hiller.

Just over two minutes later, Getzlaf put the Ducks in front by blasting a shot from the right point that bounced off the end boards and the back of Hiller's pad before bouncing into the net.

Palmieri forced a turnover in front of the net, beat a diving Hiller to the loose puck and wristed the puck past the sprawling netminder for a 4-2 Anaheim lead with 8:25 remaining.

Silfverberg's wrist shot in front made it a 5-2 game with 5:15 to play, but Monahan's power-play goal with 1:50 left gave Calgary some momentary life.

The Flames pulled Hiller in favor of an extra attacker moments later, but Lindholm cleared the puck off the glass from well inside his own zone and it took a favorable bounce into the vacated cage to account for the final score.

Stajan started the scoring with 5:10 left in the first period. Gibson stopped Joe Colborne's initial shot from the slot, but Stajan knocked home the rebound to put Calgary in front.

In the middle stanza, Dennis Wideman took Beauchemin's failed clear at the right point and fired a shot on net that Bouma redirected through the pads of Gibson for a 2-0 score at 11:02.

The Ducks cut the deficit in half four minutes later after Corey Perry fired a shot on net from the right circle and the rebound caromed off Cogliano and into the net.
